Fall Arranngment

Fall is certainly in the air and in the stores, already.

Guess I am ready for Fall, too.

So I started creating some new Fall pieces.

Awhile back I picked up this metal cone at a vintage market with the intent of using it for Seasonal Decor.

I gathered some faux Fall foliage .

Some ribbons.  In the end I decided to use the burlap style ribbon.

I started by using hot glue to glue the piece of styrofoam at the top of the piece to hold the foliage.

And here it is after everything was added and hanging on the door.

Love the little rooster in the nest.

I will use this arrangement for the inside of the front door.  Tomorrow I plan to create a decor piece for the outside of the front door.

Handmade Bead Earrings

This was a fun project.  I began by using air dry clay to make two beads, about 3/4" across.

Here are the beads on my craft mat drying.  I shaped them by hand into flat disks, created the center holes then lightly pressed a clock gear into the surface for a little added texture.  Then left them to dry.

This is the collection of items I used to create the earrings.

The first thing I did was to paint the beads with copper acrylic paint and while it was still damp I lightly mixed some aqua into the copper.  This gave the beads an old relic appearaence.
When that was dry I added hints of gold randomly over the beads.  When completely dry I gave the front and backs a good coat of Mod Podge. I let that dry while I was assembling the rest of the earrings.

And lastly added the handmade beads at the bottom with a piece of chain looped through the center hole.

Anniversary Dinner at Poor Red's

We celebrated our 15th Wedding Anniversary this week.  And decided to try an old stand by in this part of the state.  It's about a 45 minute drive from our house.

This restaurant has just recently reopened with new owners that completely remodeled the old building but kept the historic parts intact.  Like the 1 foot thick hand hewed rock walls of the original Wells Fargo Weigh Station from the 1800's that was used in the time of the California gold rush.

And hand painted vintage murals of the old west.

I first went here with my Grandfather in 1964.  It is the kind of place that people from out of town always want to visit. People come here from all over the world.  They serve their legendary Golden Cadillac drink. I have never tried one but they are famous in these parts.

Poor Red’s was originally constructed as a weigh station for Wells Fargo. It was called Kelly’s Bar from 1927 until around 1945. A guy named “Poor Red” won the bar in a game of dice, and he and his wife “Rich Opal” took it over soon after.

They have served steaks, chickens and ribs as long as I can remember.  The new owners have added to the menu and the food was very good.

Mr. K had their bar-b-que ribs.

And I had the wedge salad made from 1/2 a head of romaine lettuce.  No way I could eat the whole thing, but it was very good.

The new owners even added an outdoor patio to seat more people.  This place is always crowded on the weekends.  I am sure the new patio really helps in good weather.

Here you can see the outside of the old rock walls.

So if you are ever in this part of Northern California plan a visit to see Poor Red's on your way up Hwy 50 towards Lake Tahoe about 1/2 hour east of Sacramento.

Water Can Redo

Wow,  I could definitely feel Fall in the air today.  We are still looking at more hot weather.  But I can feel the weather changing.  Nights are getting very cool.

Today's little project is to paint a wooden watering can to look more like white enamel with black edging.

Here is what I began with, a little can I found a second hand sale.

I painted the entire can with white chalk paint leaving some areas not painted around the apple and leaves.

After the paint was dry I used a black fine point Sharpie pen to create the black edges.  I also drew around the apple and leaves.

Here is a close up of the black edges.

I like the way the black pen shows off the apple and leaves which have a slight yellow color, not pure white like the rest of the water can.  The color difference is caused by not painting too heavily over the original red and green coloring.

Cabinet Reveal

It was exciting to get up this morning to see all the pieces dried and ready to move inside.

And yes this was the day all three pieces where moved into to the house.  They fit perfectly in the spot I had planned for them.

One whole wall of pretty storage.  Can't wait for the bulbs for the side cabinets to arrive.

I am so happy the way they all turned our and work together.

These door knobs are so gorgeous.  They just sparkle in the light.  I painted the brass pieces white before adding the knobs.  Defiantly didn't want any brass left unpainted.

Same on the bottom of the cabinet, I painted the brass pieces white and left them on for a little extra detail.

The detail on the lower piece looks good painted white.  I was hoping it would show up and look pretty.

Love the way they all just fit along the wall.

And the drawer looks good and still has a non slip texture.  Sort of feels like suede now.

I would defiantly paint flocking again to clean up an old vintage drawer.

This took me over a week to finish but I love the way it all turned out.

Prepping Cabinets Day 2

Here is the china cabinet with the 2 coats of primer and one coat of paint.

One more day to paint.

Side cabinets primed and painted, one more coat to go.

Next I tackled the drawer.  I had to do something about the gold flocking.  Well, you can use chalk paint on fabric, why not flocking.

The first coat looked sort of scary.

By the second coat things where looking up.  So I waited again for the drawer to dry and gave it one more coat.

By the  third coat it was looking nice.  So I let it dry again and touched up any spots that needed it.

See the painted pieces moved inside on tomorrow's post.
