Shabby Chic Christmas Deer

Awhile back I found these 2 little wooden deer at the thrift store.  I paid $.50 each.  I thought I would make the pair of shabby chic momma and baby deer.

The first thing I needed to do was to remove the glue from the larger one.  That was a tough job.  I ended up, very carefully, using an Xacto Knife to carve and chip away all the glue.

Next I gave both of them a coat of white chalk paint.

Then I choose a rose patterned napkin from my stash and carefully separated the top printed layer from the bottom to layers.

After that I cut and tore the motifs I decided to use for the project.

Then using Mod Podge I glued the roses and buds in a pleasing design.

I also glued three flowers to the back shoulders of the momma deer and 1 flower by her ear.

I gave them both a complete coat of Mod Podge and let them dry.

For their eyes I glued teardrop shaped black crystals to the baby and 2 black heart crystals for the momma.

New Shabby Chic Clock

While visiting one of my favorite blog sites,  Shabby Art Boutique I can across a lovely clock face.

I knew right away that it would make a great clock with a wooden clock blank I have been saving for years.  Just waiting for the right image.  And I finally found it.

Here is the wooden clock blank I started with.

I began by painting this clock blank and feet white.

front

back
For the second coat I used a pale aqua paint.

While these where drying I prepped the clock face.

I sized the clock face to fit the blank then I glued it to a circular piece of foam core board.  I cut a border from patterned paper to cover the edge , then cut the center whole and glued vintage baby rick rack around the edge.

On the face of the clock I stippled on Mod Podge.

Next I used air dry clay and a mold to make the medallion.  When it was dry I painted it white then aqua.

Next I added papers cut out to fit around the clock face.  On all the edges I used distress ink to give a vintage look.  I also glued the feet to the bottom.

I glued more paper to the back just in case I stand the clock where the back can be seen.

I also cut a piece of balsa wood to cover the back opening that will swivel to change the clock battery.  And covered that with matching paper.

To decorate the top of the clock I glued 3 vintage drawer pulls, 2 porcelain and 1 glass,  topped with a little bling and pearls.

Next I glued 5 Czech glass beads at the paper edges and intersections.

And here it is, love the look.
Now I just have to decide in which room I am going to use the clock.

Thanks again Kerryanne at Shabby Art Boutique for the wonderful clock face image.

Christmas Pillows in July

This is a quick easy craft for Christmas.  Still laying low trying to avoid the 107 degrees outside.  Thank goodness for Air Conditioner.

A couple of months ago I spotted these pillow covers on Amazon.  They were priced under $5.00.

I immediately thought of Christmas when I saw them.  So last week I ordered the pair of them for my sofa this Christmas.

I thought they were really cute but knew I was going to add a little embellishment to them.

I gathered some red and green ribbons and a couple of Christmas picks and attached them to the deers antlers.

And here they are ready to be stuffed with pillow forms this winter.

Bought a New Refrigerator

We went to the big box store after receiving an email that appliances where on sale for 25% off.

I have been wanting to get a new refrigerator for a few years.  Ours is still working but I have been so unhappy with it since about the third year we had it.  Our old one is a Kenmore Elite.  I had no idea how cheaply it was made.  And we paid a lot for it.  I have a Kenmore Elite washer and it is the best washer I have ever used.

Everything on the inside was made with brittle thin plastic that was constantly breaking, doors, drawers and shelf supports.  The filter is almost impossible to change and even the hinge hold that in place cracked.  And I am not hard on appliances,  just the two of us, no small kids or teenagers.  I was so disappointed.  So when I saw my dream refrigerator on sale I had to go check it out.

All my appliances are black so this will match perfectly.  Love the water and ice on the outside, all the temperature controls, too. The deli drawer is separate from the frig.  I think I get into the deli drawer more than anything, so that alone should save energy.

And on the inside there are two huge vegetable bins which is great since we don't eat meat I need lots of room for fresh vegetables.

I also like the convertible shelf that slides out of the way when there is something tall to add to the frig.

There are lots of cool burning led lights, too, unlike my old frig. that only had one light and if you put anything on the top shelf the rest of the frig. was in the dark.

Now for the waiting part.  They sold so many we won't get ours for about 15 days.  It is going to be a long wait.

But the best part was after we added up all the coupons, discounts and sale price reductions we ended up paying less than 1/2 price.  We were in shock when they rang it up and the price was so low.

I guess all my waiting, wishing and praying paid off.  I was able to afford this refrigerator at such a low price there was no question, we had to purchase it while it was on sale.

I have come to really love the Samsung brand.  Our dishwasher is also Samsung.  And the dishes come out so clean.  I don't even use any of the chemicals to avoid water spots.  Just don't need it anymore, my glasses come out sparkling with no spots.  Best dishwasher I have every owned and the stainless steel interior is so easy to keep clean.

I know I sound like a Samsung commercial.  But I really do love the products.

I guess the old adage, good things come to those who wait, is really true.

So the anxious the waiting begins.

Fairy House Canvas

Oh boy, we are in the mist of a another major summer heat wave.  By Friday it is supposed to be 109 degrees.
That is really HOT for us.  Looks like we are in for a week of these temperatures.

A few months back while cruising the internet I came across the cutest idea for a fairy house in a tree made on a long skinny canvas.  So I gathered together the supplies I needed over the past few months and decided to make my own fairy house.

Here are the supplies I gathered together.  I also used hot glue, Gesso, Mod Podge and a sealer, glitter, Glossy Accents and Stickles.  Also a  piece of packing styrofoam I had saved.

I first carved the styrofoam to resemble the tree trunk.  I cut and shaped it to fit on the canvas above the bricks I cut from foam core board.  Then I glued both onto the canvas with hot glue.

After I glued the styrofoam to the canvas I wrinkled the brown packing paper and used Mod Podge to glue down the paper to resemble tree bark.  Here you can see the foam core board bricks at the bottom.

Next I bent 16" branches with stamens to resemble tree branches.  I also glued a few oak sticks to the canvas.   Then I coated the entire piece with gesso to white out everything.

And here is the entire piece painted white.  While this dried I prepared the fairy doors and lanterns, printed, glued to light cardboard and cut them out.  I added a little orange glitter to the lantern and Glossy Accents along the edges.

I also glued orange paper to the backs of the windows then added Glossy Accents for panes and when that was dry I brushed a little Gesso on the panes before hot glueing them to the tree.  I also glued on the trio of fairies and the owl.  I painted fairy dust trails on the canvas using the clear Stickles.

And here is the finished piece.

Nature Shadow Box - Part 3 - Completed

Finally it's finished.  I ended up putting a sliding panel with a glass knob on the bottom portion of the box.

It simply slides up and down to gain access to the enclosed area.

I used distressing ink on all the edges.

The back side is also covered with the patterned paper and has a piece of twine for hanging.

I mounted the burlap boards at different heights from the back, then added the insects, also raised from the boards along with the words.

In the spaces on the back I added a few foliage arrangements.
At the top left there are 2 fern leaves, a small brown leaf and a tiny pink flower.

At the center right are 3 Gerber daisies and a couple of small leaves.  These are leaves I have saved from my Tea Forte tea bags.  They were just too cute to toss out.  They have been in my stash for awhile.  Always knew they would come in handy one day.

And lastly on the bottom left I added a distressed wooden frame with a small purchased flower bunch.

Next to the butterfly I glued a distressed doily then glued 3 three small bottles on the bottom.

Along the top edge I added a ribbon of muslin fabric I tore and pleated on my sewing machine.

On the top right corner I glued a tan ruffle around a dark brown fabric flower making it resemble a distressed sunflower.

I also randomly glued small bees, dragonflies and butterflies around the the front of the box.

And here is the completed box.  Ready to hang or sit on a shelf.  This was a fun project just a very busy week to start such a detailed project.  I think this will look great with my late summer and early fall decor come August and September and beginning of October.
